❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How many calories does my dog need per day?
It depends on weight, age, and activity level. First we calculate RER (Resting Energy Requirement): 70 × (weight in kg)0.75. Then we apply a multiplier based on life stage and body condition. A neutered adult 25 kg dog needs ~1,100 kcal/day, while an active working dog of the same weight may need 1,700+ kcal/day.
What's the difference between RER and DER?
RER (Resting Energy Requirement) is the calories needed for basic bodily functions at rest — like a pet's "idle" energy. DER (Daily Energy Requirement) is RER adjusted for real-life factors: age, activity, neuter status, and body condition. Our calculator shows both so you can see your pet's baseline vs. actual needs.
How can I help my pet lose weight?
Start by calculating your pet's actual daily calorie needs — many overweight pets are simply overfed. Reduce portions by 10–20%, switch to a weight management formula, and increase exercise gradually. Our calculator helps you find the right target. Shop weight management food →
How many calories are in dog food?
Dry dog food typically contains ~350–400 kcal per cup. Wet food averages ~250–300 kcal per can. Always check the label — calorie density varies by brand and formula. Our calculator converts calorie needs into both cups and grams for dry food, plus cans for wet food.
